Meaning of my name

March 11th, 2012 Leave a comment Go to comments

While writing this topic to Facebook, I do want to keep the long version in my blog.

My name is 鄭永賢 in Chinese characters.

鄭 (Chung) is the 5th most used family name after Kim, Lee, Park, and Choi in Korea. Although it really does mean nothing in these days, ? was a country’s name in the ancient China around BC 806~375. The left side of it “ancestral rites” and the right “village” make the meaning of a village that is good at ancestral rites. 永賢 (Young Hyun – written in English alphabet that sounds like Korean pronunciation of the Chinese characters) is my given name and each means forever and wise. I didn’t discuss the meaning of my name with my parents, but in my own interpretation, someone who wants to be a wise person should keep putting an effort by learning new things and communicating with new generations. There is no perfect sagacity in our changing world. I am learning things and communicating with others like my name.

It seems your name has good meaning with it.

The interpretation of my given name, however, can be very strange if you look up each words separately in the Chinese-Korean dictionary and simply add the meanings together. I don’t know why my grandfather chose these characters. @.@

    Good for you. :)
